CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, May 30.2018 – NEVIS’ Premier, Hon. Mark Brantley has disclosed that Closed Circuit Television Cameras have been installed at the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS).
The implementation comes amidst concerns of growing security problems at the institution.
In making the disclosure at his monthly media conference yesterday (May 29), Brantley described the implementation as a sad day for the people of Nevis.
According to the premier, 18 cameras were installed, and it has the capacity to go up to 64.
“The Ministry of Education has indicated that they have invested quite heavily, and the Charlestown Secondary School is now equipped with camera surveillance which is live, which is recording, which is being monitored.”
In March of this year, two male students were recorded on camera holding and beating a female from the same institution. That incident caused widespread condemnation on both islands.
“It gives me a heavy heart to report that because, of course, hundreds of thousands of dollars which we could have spent elsewhere, we could have bought. But here we are having to buy security surveillance equipment because of the behavior that we are seeing in our schools.”
Against that backdrop, he is urging parents to do better in managing their children and teaching them value.
He also called upon teachers to do their best when children are in their care.
“But I feel that is a sad day for Nevis when we have to install cameras at our schools.”
Against that backdrop, it was revealed that the Gingerland Secondary School will also see CCTV cameras being installed.
