Dorm leaders during a session on conflict resolution in 2017

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 31, 2018 (SKNIS): The Department of Youth Empowerment in St. Kitts is offering free training in leadership, first aid, effective communication, goal setting and other life skills development techniques to individuals who are organizing camps and other activities for young people over the summer.

The first session begins on Saturday, June 09, and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the dining room at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium. Acting Director of Youth, Pierre Liburd, noted that there will be four training sessions in all, every Saturday, as it is part of the development workshops that the department offers to dorm leaders and volunteers for its annual Summer Residential Camp.

“We are inviting all persons, especially young people who are interested and are ... connected to any camp that will be happening in St. Kitts or in Nevis over the summer,” Mr. Liburd said. “The idea here is to develop their capacity to deliver effective interaction, mentorship, governance of a youth-focussed camp.”

To participate in the training, interested individuals will have to register with the Department of Youth Empowerment located on the top floor of The Cable Building on Cayon Street. A total of fifty persons will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. This makes early registration extremely important.

The acting youth director noted that the community will be well served as the young people become empowered to build partnerships in nation building.

“They (the participants) are expected to take this training not just to employ during the week of the Summer Residential Camp but will also take that training and go into their communities, serve different agencies and develop their own [programmes] but use the skills that they have to serve the interest of young people,” he said.

The trainees will also be called upon from time to time to assist the Department of Youth Empowerment as it continues to roll out programmes to benefit the nation’s youth population.
