Nevis in preparation mode for hurricane season

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June !.2018 – THE Government of Nevis is fine tuning its hurricane strategy ahead of the impending season, which begins tomorrow, June 1, and is forecast to be similar in strength or more powerful than last year.

Experts predict that there will be approximately 17 storms for 2018, with 10 of them being named.

Though the season officially starts on June 1, islands in the Western Caribbean felt the effects of the first named storm of the season.

Subtropical Storm Alberto dumped large amounts of rainfall in the Western and Northern Caribbean while claiming five lives, including a journalist and his cameraman.

In the federation, Premier Mark Brantley commended the work that has been undertaken over the last several years, on both St. Kitts and Nevis.

He disclosed that Mr. Brian Dyer and his team have done a commendable in preparing the public; according to the premier, that is done by ensuring that shelters and centers are well prepared.

Just recently, the government partnered with the Japanese Government prepare shelters, and Premier Brantley pointed to the Bath Shelter as one of those that benefited from the upgrade.

Further, Brantley noted that a retaining wall was installed in the Fenton Hill area, a location that is prone to flooding and mudslides.

“I think that all of the shelters are ready, we do all the checks, and I believe that the season is now starting, and the disaster preparedness folks will be out. That is part of what they will be doing, through public works they will be doing everything to ensure that Ghauts, ravines, and runoffs are cleared.”

However, homeowners are urged to take their own safety and security into account, ensuring that their respective houses are in good condition.

“We will continue our efforts as it relates to public awareness…and to ensure that our public facilities and shelters are in good order,” Brantley said.

In 2017, the island suffered damage following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The two Category 5 storms left millions of dollars in damage to the island.

Meanwhile, officials at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on St. Kitts are currently putting their final plans in place ahead of the season.
