BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 21ST 2009 (CUOPM) – Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Williams is applauding an alert police officer for taking the 19th illegal firearm off the street.

“It was a heroic act, which has received the commendation of the High Command. It shows bravery and ought to be emulated by other members of the Force in our commitment to fight crime and ensure our citizens live in a safe and peaceful society,” said Commisioner of Police Mr. Austin Williams.

The vigilant officer, who was on duty at the Ferry Terminal early Monday morning attempted to stop and search 29-year-old Market Street resident Joseph Fahie, on suspicion of having control drugs, arms and ammunition.

Fahie, who was at the time riding a bicycle westwards along the Bay Road, resisted the officer's attempt to search him. As Fahie attempted to remove “something” from his waist during the struggle, the police officer drew his service pistol shot Fahie in the leg.

“Other officers responded and assisted in conducting the search on Fahie.  One 357 Smith and Wesson Revolver and five rounds of ammunition were found in his waist,” said Police Spokesman, Cromwell Henry.

Henry said Fahie was arrested and taken to the Basseterre Police Station where he was formally charged for possession of firearm and possession of ammunition. He was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison after a court appearance.

Fahie was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he was treated for a slight abrasion to the leg and discharged.

The confiscation of the revolver brings to 19, the number of illegal firearms seized so far for this year.
