BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 28-year-old grandson of Bernice Iona Nicholas has been charged with causing her death.

Michael Nicholas of Ponds Estate was formally arrested and charged on a warrant, in the first instance, for the offence of Murder yesterday (June 7).

The 82-year-old Bernice, also of Ponds Estate, was found dead in her home by one of her grandsons at about 9:15 p.m. on June 03, 2018.

An autopsy performed by Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Valery Alexandrov on June 4 concluded that the octogenarian died as a result of mechanical asphyxia due to obstruction of the airway.

Just a few hours after the body of his grandmother was discovered, Michael had been involved in an accident where he managed to escape with just minor injuries.

According to police, sometime after 2 a.m. on June 4, Michael reported to the Frigate Bay Police Station that he was involved in an accident on the South East Peninsula Road.

Investigations by police revealed that Michael owns and was driving motor pickup P8254 when he drove off the road and down the hillside.

He was taken to the J.N.F. Hospital where he was treated for minor head injuries and discharged.
