NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (June 12, 2018) -- The Ministry of Health on Nevis will soon have the ability to produce its own electronic information and promotion material as it promotes healthy lifestyles in a bid to reduce chronic diseases on the island, thanks to another gift from the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams, Junior Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), was presented with a cheque by His Excellency George Gow-Wei Chiou, the Republic of China (Taiwan) Resident Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis at a ceremony at the Franklyn Browne Community Centre in Newcastle on June 12, 2018.

In response, the health minister thanked the ambassador for the kind gesture and described the donation as significant and timely. She also gave an insight into how the funds would be utilised.

“These funds will be used to strengthen our Health Promotion Unit which will soon be expanded to include a communications unit.

“What we’re trying to do at the Ministry of Health, is to ensure that we get the information regarding healthy lifestyles to everyone, and so, we are adding a Communications Unit so that our word and the lessons can be heard far and wide to the persons down in Cox and to the persons in Mount Lily and Fountain,” she said.

Ambassador Gow-Wei noted that his government and people were pleased to partner with the NIA and its ongoing fight against chronic diseases.

“As a partner in fighting against the chronic disease, the Embassy of Taiwan is grateful to extend its assistance to the Ministry of Health in providing media equipment to the Communication Division. Currently, the Health Promotion Unit,” he said.

The ceremony took place during session two of the six-week Stanford Self-Management Programme being held at the same venue. The aim is to sensitize clients of the Combermere Health Centre on ways to manage chronic illnesses.

Others present at the handing over were Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Shelisa Martin-Clarke, Health Planner, Chef Michael Henville, a facilitator of the Stanford Self-Management Programme, and participants of the programme.
