Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) announces plans for 2018 Awards Gala – Names UN Ambassador Dr.Thelma Phillip Brown as Patron

By: (SPBS), Press Release

June 18th, 2018 -- SPBS invites you to join us on September 1st for its grand Awards Gala at Maestros Ballroom in the Bronx, NY. This occasion is special. SPBS is celebrating its 21st year of giving. According to SPBS President, Dr. Stewart Williams, “this is the best opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to the SKN community and to encourage others to participate in delivering tangible education benefits for our youth”.

This year our theme is “Playing To Win”. How fitting that at such a critical milestone on our 21st Anniversary, that we can reflect on our journey and position ourselves to win well into the future. While we remain committed to educational excellence, we felt that a great metaphor for our theme is to capture the essence of winning by presenting our past and current sports heroes. You will see us introduce the very best of what we had to offer in Cricket, Basketball, Netball and Track and Field over the next couple of months.

We are excited that to anchor this Awards Gala, we have the honor and privilege of the services of UN Ambassador Dr. Thelma Phillip Browne.

Ambassador Phillip-Browne graduated with a medical degree from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, Jamaica in 1978. Having served as a Medical Officer and later District Medical Officer for many years, in 1996 she received training at the John Hopkins School of Medicine’s Summer Program in Public Health and served as Director of Primary Health Care and later Chief Medical Officer.

She is a 1993 graduate of the Cardiff University School of Medicine in Wales, with a Diploma in Dermatological Science and practiced as a Dermatologist up until assuming her current post as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States of America, in July 2015.

In 2011, Ambassador Dr. Phillip-Browne obtained a Master of Theological Science (MTS) degree, from Anderson University Indiana, parent home of the Church of God, and has served as a lay preacher in her local church.

The proud mother of two daughters and one son and grandmother of two girls, Ambassador Phillip-Browne is a sports enthusiast and former national netball player.

It is rather fitting that Dr. Thelma Phillip-Browne, a former national netballer has agreed to be our Patron, when our theme for the 2018 gala is “Playing to Win”. We want to encourage everyone to begin making plans to attend this grand affair by purchasing your tickets online www.spbsinc.org or from any of the members of SPBS. You can also purchase the grand annual “7 day Caribbean Cruise” raffle tickets online.
