Opposition pleased following meetings with civil society groups

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 18.2018 – FOLLOWING two meetings with civil society organizations in recent weeks, the Opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) has expressed a sense of satisfaction with discussions and feedback.

Just recently, they met and held discussions with representatives from the Christian Council and the Evangelical Association in a joint setting, while also holding talks with the Bar Association.

The meetings came after the SKNLP members wrote requesting a formal meeting to discuss issues they are facing in the political landscape.

Opposition Member of Parliament and Representation for Constituency Two, Marcella Liburd explained to SKNVibes that they relayed critical issues facing them on a daily basis.

Included in the topics discussed, were the issues of the non-availability of the community centers, concerns surrounding difficulties of the electoral office and allegations against Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris and Peter Virdee.

Liburd emphasized that while in office the then opposition members were allowed to use community centers for their monthly political meetings. A position that was allowed owing to the center being community-based, and that opens it up for political and social meetings or church activities.

“Another issue we raised was what was taking place at the electoral office. There are a lot of irregularities that are happening there, and we raised these matters because they are very troubling.  It is a trend with respect to how our democracy is being eroded,” she said.

In addition, talks of the allegation being meted out to them by the Speaker of National Assembly was also discussed.

Since losing the 2015 General Elections, the SKNLP members have vocally criticized civil society organizations, including the Christian Council and the Evangelical Association for their silence on matters of national interest.

On the issue of Peter Virdee, Liburd said the topic was raised and that the PM should take a similar position as Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister, Asot Michael and resign.

The vocal opposition MP noted that the dialogue was engaging as questions asked by both organizations were pertinent and relevant. She added: “They have said that they will look into these matters and return to us.”

During the course of this week, SKNLP members are slated to hold talks with representatives from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
