...CoP and DPP receive no communication from Curacao

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 19. 2018 – THE Prosecution’s Office in Curacao is seeking the assistance of their counterparts in St. Kitts-Nevis and the media in locating a wanted fugitive believed to be hiding out in the federation.

Emanuell Poppen, 23, of Curacao, is wanted for armed robbery and murder of a Chinese merchant in his home country.

In a statement sent to media representatives from the Spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor’s Office Curaçao, the authorities stated that the man is on Interpol’s wanted list for the crimes which were committed in 2013, when he was 18-years-old.

“The armed robbery on the Chinese supermarket Hua Jiant on Curaçao took place on May 9, 2013. The merchant was killed at a short distance in front of his wife and child and was recorded by cameras in the store. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has issued a reward of 10.000 Guilders (approx. 5.500 US Dollars) for the person that provides crucial information that leads to the arrest of Poppen,”

Contacted today for a comment, Spokesperson, Norman Serphos confirmed that his office sent a letter to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution on June 8.

“We have sent a letter to the Prosecutor of St. Kitts and Nevis, in which we requested legal assistance, and in which we also told the prosecutor in St. Kitts and Nevis that we are going to ask the press for help on the island.”

However, no report was made directly to the police, but Serphos told SKNVibes that he was expecting the prosecution to relay that information to their police counterparts.

“I don’t know about the follow up. I do not know if the prosecution office of St. Kitts had answer us, but I am aware that that is a fact. This guy is on Interpol’s Red Notice list,” adds Serphos.

Commissioner of Police, Ian Queeley told SKNVibes News that his office did not receive any notice from Curacao Prosecutors, nor did they obtain documents from the local DPP’s office.

According to the Curacao Prosecutions Office, “Poppen risks a prison sentence of maximum of 18 years. This according to the criminal Code of Curaçao, article 2:291, theft with violence.”

“It is believed that Poppen has moved between different islands in the Caribbean. He was on St. Maarten and other nearby islands in recent months, but is now, according to sources, believed to be hiding on St. Kitts & Nevis,” the statement said.

SKNVibes News reached out to the Director of Public Prosecution, Valston Graham, who emphatically denied receiving any information from the Curacao authorities.
