Roadtown, Tortola - As Government prepares to commission the traffic lights and signals at the Road Town Roundabout and at the intersection of Admin and Waterfront Drive, Communications and Works Minister Honourable Julian Fraser calls on residents to act responsibly.

“Now that these areas are signalised, any obstruction or impediment can severely hamper the flow of traffic; therefore it is imperative that drivers are courteous and mindful of the way they use the roadways,” Hon. Fraser told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“It is imperative that operators of motor vehicles for hire acknowledge the need for the free flow of traffic in order to ensure the desired effect of the traffic signal lights, specifically in the case of buses loading and off-loading passengers at the Roundabout which is an offense that currently attracts a fine of $100 and will be enforced at the commissioning of the traffic lights. I therefore encourage bus drivers to utilize the bus stop provided next door to the roundabout in the vicinity of Lime offices in order to be compliant,” the minister continued.

In addition to motorists effectively using the road, pedestrians are also encouraged to be responsible when using the cross walks. The traffic light technicians with JoClaud Enterprises Limited designed the system so that pedestrians would have exclusive rights at that particular intersection. That means once the walk button is engaged, it sends a message to the traffic lights controller to turn all traffic lights to red thereby giving all pedestrians crossing lanes the right-of-way simultaneously.

“This is exactly what we need as we strive to provide a pedestrian safe capital,” Hon. Fraser said.

“Motorists and pedestrians both have responsibilities. Motorists will have to adhere to the traffic lights as well as minimise delays to traffic and pedestrians will have to be responsible when using the cross walks by waiting for the cross signal before traversing the roadways.  We do not expect that people will cross the road with the green light, jaywalking and placing their lives in danger now that provisions have been made to safeguard pedestrians,” Minister Fraser concluded.

On March 13, 2009 the Government signed a contract with JoClaud Enterprises Limited to install traffic lights at the Road Town Roundabout and at the intersection of Admin and Waterfront Drive in an effort to relieve the traffic congestion and to provide a more pedestrian friendly capital.
