BVI, 4 July 2018 - The Department of Waste Management’s Cash for Work Programme ended on a high note.
The programme was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to assist with clean-up efforts while injecting funds back into the local economy post disasters Irma and Maria.
Department of Waste Management’s Manager, Mr. Greg Massicote, said he was pleased with the work done by the programme’s participants whom he highlighted were mostly females. He also thanked UNDP for their role in making the programme a reality.
Mr. Massicote said, “Overall, the programme was a success. The participants were really appreciative for the opportunity and the added hands helped the department achieve certain tasks that we were unable to because of the added work load since September 6, 2017.”
Works included bush cutting, debris removal, painting and cleaning up and around communal dumpsters. Participants were both males and females ages 18 and over.
The first phase of the programme began in February on Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada. The deadline was extended to allow for a second phase from June 4 to 29 on Tortola.
