Disaster Management among matters discussed when OECS Heads met with President of Chile

By: OPM, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 6, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, and his fellow Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Heads today, Friday, July 6, met in caucus with the President of the Republic of Chile, His Excellency Sebastián Piñera Echenique, to discuss several matters of mutual interests.

The meeting between President Piñera and the OECS leaders this morning took place on the margins of the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM being held in Jamaica from July 4-6.

The Chilean President was one of two leaders outside of CARICOM invited to engage regional leaders this week during the CARICOM Heads meeting.

Among the issues discussed during today’s important dialogue were cooperation on disaster management, as well as education and training opportunities.

President Piñera is expected to meet with the full slate of CARICOM leaders later today.

This morning’s meeting with the President of Chile comes one day after CARICOM Heads of Government met Cuba’s President, His Excellency Miguel Díaz Canel, during Thursday’s plenary session of their 39th Regular Meeting.

That meeting was expected to focus on further strengthening ties between the region and Cuba, with a new leader at the helm.

It was the first time the Cuban leader was meeting the heads of the CARICOM grouping since assuming office in April.
