BVI, 19 July 2018 - Vendors selling food in the vicinity of Road Town and other public areas throughout the Virgin Islands are reminded to obtain Food Handlers Certification.

Chief Environmental Health Officer, Lionel Michael stated, “This is necessary because it has been observed that persons are selling food without the proper equipment required to carry out safe food handling, such as a hand wash stations, hot holding units (chafing pans), cold holding units (coolers with ice), adequate number of serving utensils and proper attire.”

He explained the inadequate conditions can contribute to foodborne illnesses in persons and food spoilage.

The Environmental Health Division is also advising prospective vendors to seek out Food Handlers sessions as the Territory approaches Emancipation celebration activities to ensure proper handling of food for sale.

“Registering with the Environmental Health Division will ensure that owners and employees of food businesses meet the requirements for handling food,” said Mr. Michael.

Vendors must obtain a valid trade licence from the Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs and receive permission from the City Manager’s Office to operate within the city’s boundaries.

For further clarification regarding the requirements for compliance, contact the Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs at 468-2008, the City Manager’s Office at 441-8800 or the Environmental Health Division at 468-5110.
