Prisoners' Appreciation Event

By: HMP-SKNNCC, Press Release

July 26th, 2018 -- Over the past two weeks, the St. Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC) has been exceptionally busy in carrying out its mandate to assist in the development of local Culture, nurture St. Kitts – Nevis Heritage, and deliver the highest quality National Carnival Product each year.

The SKNNCC started off on Friday July 6th by hosting its annual, Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Residents’ Appreciation Event. Each year, various Human Resources Units from the HMP assist the Carnival Committee in a variety of ways, e.g., plumbing, carpentry, painting, general infrastructural development, etc., at various Carnival venues. With the Minister of Culture, the Hon. Shawn K. Richards, and his Permanent Secretary, Mr. Stanley Knight both off island, Mr. Troy “Bif” Mills, Director of Culture, served as the Keynote Speaker.   He thanked the Residents for their continued assistance and urged them to use these “in-prison” experiences as rehabilitation exercises, and to develop value-adding relationships, which they could tap into for networking possibilities subsequent to their release.

In giving comments, Noah Mills, National Carnival Chairman, noted that for Sugar Mas 46, the services provided by the Residents allowed the Carnival Committee to save an estimated EC $20, 000.  Mills also reported that the quality of work done has always been exemplary; the commitment and attitudes of the Residents are commendable; and relationship being cultivated between the SKNNCC and HMP is extremely beneficial.

Each year, several Companies contribute to this Appreciation Event. For example, the St. Kitts Carib Brewery and KOSCAB were Donors this year. Against this backdrop, Mr. Conrad Senior, Country Manager of KOSCAB attended the Ceremony.  In speaking, Mr. Senior stated that it was a privilege for KOSCAB to be a part of such a Rehabilitation and Recognition Project and that he looks forward to a continued alliance with the SKNNCC.

Speaking on behalf of the HMP, Ms. Shauna Herbert underscored the importance of this HMP-SKNNCC Partnership and recorded that each year, Residents eagerly volunteer way in advance, to be part of the “Carnival Workforce,” as they not only enjoy it but also appreciate how they are treated. That is, with respect and dignity.

At the end of the formalities, the Residents were treated to a Buffet Lunch and received stipends for their contributions.

The SKNNCC thanks the HMP and its Corporate Sponsors for their continued support.
