CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE 20th Summer Environmental Awareness Programme, run by the Nevis Public Library Service, ended Friday (July 24) with a closing ceremony at the Charlestown Secondary School.
Minister of Agriculture Hon. Robelto Hector commended organisers of the programme. He noted that with the support of parents it creates a safety net, the kind that organisers of these kinds of programsme cherish.
Coordinator Anatasia Parris said in her overview that in celebration of its 20th anniversary, this year’s programme had four common headings: Seas/Oceans, Natural Environment, Architectural Heritage and Cultural Heritage. The high school students cover all four areas, while the two groups of primary school students concentrated on two areas each. The nine-12 pupils dwelt on Architectural Heritage and Cultural Heritage while and the five-eight pupils handled the Seas and Oceans and Natural Environment.
According to Parris, organisers took this slant to try and ensure the continued awareness of all participants to the importance of preserving local heritage and their role in the preservation process. She said another goal was to create an understanding of the linkage between these four areas and their economic value to the island.
The 160 students participated in discussions, hikes, singing, art and craft, poetry and essay competitions.
Sessions were held at the Charlestown Secondary School and the Gingerland Library.
The closing ceremony also consisted of poems, songs, a dance and drumming. There was also an exhibition of the art and craft prepared by the students.
