Ministry of Youth Empowerment’s Summer Residential Camp Focuses on ‘Preserving Our Land of Beauty’

By: EMU, Press Release

EMU), St. Kitts, July 30, 2018 -- The Ministry of Youth Empowerment’s Residential Summer Camp is a unique and prestigious two-week residential summer program for youth ages eight – sixteen years. Over its 35 year tenure, the camp has promoted the value of a good citizen to the society and fostered an environment where valuable relationships are built and lives positively impacted.

The camp, held at the Beach Allen Primary School, is hosted annually and brings a sector of the nation’s youth together to socialize and empower them to be responsible citizens.  The disciplines are designed to teach life values that will enable youth to be productive members of society and to conduct a variety of activities that will provide structure in the years to come.

This year, the Education Media Unit was invited to host a three-day session on film making. The students were to learn video recording and editing techniques which enabled them to create and produce a one minute film.

Director of the Education Media Unit, Ms. Maria Crawford, assured it was her pleasure to accept the invitation for her the staff at EMU to host the workshops.  “The youth camp is designed to be fun and empowering, while having a blast. The children will gain confidence, tenacity, and skills that will help them cope with the challenges of the modern world,” stated Ms. Crawford.

Education Media Staff including Akila Phillp, Craig Mc Dowell, Glenn Nisbett and Jason Connor made presentations on various aspects of film production which were well received by some of the participants.

The main objectives of the camp included advising the participants to realize and occupy their place in society and encourage an atmosphere where they can develop life skills.  To this extent, the dorm leaders (mature/older campers) were engaged in a week-long training exercise from the 15th – 21st July.  The exercise developed their leadership capabilities and taught them the importance of conflict resolution, amongst other qualities that would be fitting in their stint as dorm leaders.  The other campers were brought in on the 22nd -29th July.

Keeping with the theme, ‘Preserving Our Land of Beauty,’ the sessions and activities were geared towards conservation of the environment and culture.  They also promoted character building traits, these included sessions on waste management hosted by Admiral’s Enterprises and Solid Waste Management Personnel.  Youth Officer, Kristen Hendrickson stated these, “Help youths discover their full potentials and civic responsibilities and encourage youths to build team-work through various activities.”  Some of the recreational activities they were involved in were African and marching band drumming, fruit decorating, photography and t-shirt designing.

The campers were also involved in various environmental friendly initiatives during the week such as Water Day, where they replaced all beverages with water, a beach cleanup at Keys as well a tour of the facilities at the Christophe Habour and talks with the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network.
