Met Office sets the record straight on purported heatwave

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August. 07.2018 – SENIOR Meteorologist at the St. Kitts Meteorological Services, Elmo Burke, is denying a social media post that circulated yesterday (Aug. 06) indicating that there was an impending heatwave.

In an advisory issued last evening, Burke indicated that the message which was circulated via ‘Whatsapp Messenger’ is “NOT an authentic message from the St. Kitts Met Office nor is intended for the residents of St. Kitts and Nevis”.

He said at the moment there is “no threatening heat wave advisory for us here in St. Kitts and Nevis”.

However, it was noted that if such a weather condition develops and a warning is issued in the future for citizens and residents in St. Kitts and Nevis, it will clearly be labeled from “The St. Kitts Met Office and will be on our letterhead and shared widely via the media houses and through NEMA (also on their letterhead)”.

“We are encouraging the general public to be guided by information from the St. Kitts Met Office and NEMA who are the competent authority for weather information and disaster information here in St. Kitts and Nevis. I will also like to discourage persons in the general public from spreading inaccurate and unsubstantiated information via social media about possible weather events for us here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Burke.

SKNVibes obtained a copy of the statement circulated via social media, and it purported that an Equinox phenomenon will affect us in the next 5 days. Please stay indoors and keep animals indoor or protected especially from 11am-4pm daily. The temperature will fluctuate and may reach 40 degrees Celsius. This can easily cause dehydration and sun stroke. (Ps: this phenomena is due to the sun directly positioned above the equator line.)

The official statement from the St. Kitts Met Office was signed by the Senior Meteorological Officer.
