St. George's, Grenada: Members of the opposition are expressing grave concern about developments in the National HIV/AIDS programme.  Information reaching the Opposition states that the services of  the entire staff including the head of the programme Mrs Caroline Alexis- Thomas were terminated and millions of dollars lost in funding from the world bank project which started and was well on the way under the previous administration.  It is unfortunate that the National Democratic Congress Government does not realise that HIV/AIDS is a development issue and not merely a health issue.

Former Minister for Health Mrs. Ann David-Antoine says that she finds it difficult to understand why the Government will terminate the contract of someone like Ms Thomas who has a wealth of experience and skills and is respected regionally and internationally.  She said in light of the growing threats of the HIV/AIDS Virus, the Government should be doing everything to heighten awareness and expand the work already done in this area.

The opposition says the Government has also failed to continue the plan which was developed and supported by regional and international institutions to fight this deadly desease.  The new administration is allowing personalities and politics to overshadow the importance of the fight against this deadly virus and health in general.

In light of this, the members of her Majesty’s Opposition wishes to commend Ms Thomas and the team which was dismissed for their outstanding and dedicated services in the fight to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.  The work done by the team was recognized locally, regionally and internationally and should be built upon.  It is unfortunate that such actions were taken against committed worker who had a passion for what they did.

The Opposition notes that similar actions had been taken against a number of well qualified and committed workers since the NDC assumed office.  In most cases these persons are replaced with individuals who are granted political favors.

“We recognize this as a developing trend of the NDC administration since the Government was prepared to allow Grenadians to die before continuing an agreement with Island Health Services” says the former Minister.

She said it is disturbing and frightening that the Government continues to put the lives of innocent Grenadians on the alter of politics; and calls on the Government to continue to build on the achievements of the NNP rather than destroy them.
