SKN see improvements at both CAPE and CSEC exams

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Aug. 16.2018 – THE Ministry of Education in St. Kitts and Nevis has reported that it has seen increased overall passes at the 2018 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), and the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams.

    The disclosure came from the Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards and other officials from the ministry at a media conference yesterday (Aug. 15) at Government Headquarters.

    Minister Richards revealed that for the May/June 2018 CSEC examination 160,000 candidates sat the regional examination of which, 1461 were local candidates with 5718 subject entries.

    Based on the preliminary results, the federation recorded an overall pass rate of 87.34%, up from the 87.15% last year for CAPE.

    Providing additional statistics on the CAPE results, the Minister pointed out that 88.08% passes were recorded for public school students in the examination, while private candidates were 77.98%.

    For CSEC, public institutions record 79.41% last year, and for 2018  the figure stood at 82.19%. At the private level, the pass percentage went up, with 2017 recording 75.71, while this year saw 78.16% pass.

    Though they recorded increase passes, the Minister lamented that the were alarmed with the decrease in passes for integrated Science and Physical Education.
    English A, English B (Literature) and Mathematics all recorded above 60% passes this year.
    In the case of English A,  439 subject passes out of 546 were recorded, for an 80.40%, English B – 57 passes out of 63, for 90.48%, while Mathematics saw 327 passes out of 500, 65.40%.

    The Saddlers High School showed vast improvement, according to the minister, as they record an 82.75% pass rate this year – 235 acceptable passes out of 284.
    Basseterre High School, 631 out of 754 (86.69%); Cayon High School, 451 acceptable subject passes out of 553 (81.56); Charles E. Mills High School, 351 out 430 (81.63%); the Charlestown High School, 546 of 715 (76.36%); Gingerland High school, 251 out of 262 (95.80); Immaculate Conception Catholic, 182 out of 231 (78.79%); Nevis International, 30 out of 37 (81.08%); Verchilds High School -457 out of 525 (87.04%) and Washington Archibald High – 794 out of 1010 (78.61).
     
    Basseterre High School’s Zidane Knight is the federation’s top performer, attaining 13 grade one passes and one grade 2. Abion Stevens from the same institution gained 11 grade ones and two grade 2 passes, at the CSEC level.
