BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Aug. 19.2018 – POLICE have arrested four persons and are on the hunt for Vincent Taylor in connection to yesterday’s (Aug.18) shooting death of Sergeant, Leon Powell.

Powell, a business proprietor in Newton Ground, was shot and killed after he put up a fight during an armed robbery at around 1:00 a.m. on his premises.

Police, while updating the media on the investigation at a press conference last evening, told reporters that the various departments within the police force, including the Violent Crimes Unit, responded to the call of a shooting at the businessman’s premises.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found the motionless body of Powell, and the District Medical Officer pronounced him dead on the scene.

Based on preliminary investigations, the officers revealed that two, armed, masked men entered the business premises, robbed the patrons of their valuables and proceeded to rob the sergeant.

“Our deceased colleague resisted and was shot multiple times,” revealed Assistant Commissioner of Police, Andre Mitchell.

The scene was processed, according to the police, and a number of items of evidential value were taken into police custody for forensics.

One shotgun was recovered and is being held for forensics to determine if it was used in the shooting incident.

Police confirmed that a search operation was conducted after the incident and the weapon was found but did not disclose its location.

The public’s assistance is being sought with regards to any information that will lead to the capture and prosecution of the perpetrators of the crime.

Sgt. Powell’s death has brought the number of homicide for the year to 18; and he is the second police officer to be killed in recent months.
