21 August 2018 -- On Monday 20 August, officials from the UK Government met with Dominica’s Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Mr Peter Saint Jean. The meeting was held to discuss UK support for the Government of Dominica’s efforts to tackle youth unemployment, particularly amongst disadvantaged and disabled youth between ages 18 to 30.

The Minister said, “I am delighted to be working in partnership with the UK. This is an excellent opportunity to build on existing Government initiatives. We are fully committed to making this a huge success. Young people will be at the heart of rebuilding and developing the economy.”

The UK has assigned specialist consultants, Mott MacDonald and its partners to deliver the programme. The consultants will now work with government agencies, the private sector and youth groups over the next eight months to design a project that will meet the specific needs of Dominica, particularly following the devastating hurricanes of 2017. It will then be implemented in partnership with the Government of Dominica over a three year period.

The particular focus of the programme will be to provide basic skills training for disadvantaged youth and persons with disabilities. It will also work to improve the delivery, certification and quality of skills training in Dominica.

The programme aims to improve the prospects for employment and tackle high rates of youth unemployment. By working with the private sector and national training institutions, it hopes to provide a foundation for long-term impacts beyond the life of the programme.
