BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man ran to save his life last night (July 29) and was sheltered in a Godwin’s Ghaut home after an unidentified man fired several shots at him.

At approximately 8:30 last evening, Akeba Samuel of Verchilds was shot at by a man dressed in dark clothing and a hooded jacket while he was walking his dog from his home to Godwin’s Ghaut and back.

According to reports, which were today confirmed by Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, Samuel had taken his pet [dog] for a walk and on returning home he had stopped at a shop in Godwin’s Ghaut, where he remained for some time.

However, while continuing his journey at about 8:30 p.m., the unidentified man started firing shots in his direction.

“Investigations revealed that Samuel started running when the assailant opened fire on him. The gunman pursued and continued to fire more shots but none of them had made contact with Samuel. He ran into the home of a resident of Godwin’s Ghaut and the gunman dispersed from the area,” Henry said.

He also informed that investigations are ongoing.

This is the third shooting incident within 12 days to have occurred in Godwin’s Ghaut and its immediate surroundings.

On Saturday, July 18, 24-year-old Dexter Marsham of Godwin Ghaut was shot multiple times to the body and was pronounced dead by District Medical Officer Dr. Norgen Wilson. A post mortem later revealed that he died from gunshot injuries to the head.

According to a police release, Royden Gumbs and his mother, Jessica Gumbs, were also shot, and a fourth victim, Kyam Marshum, was also believed to have been shot (grazed) during the incident.

And three days later, sometime after 6:00 a.m., a number of gunshots were fired at a residence in Godwin Estate but no one was injured.
