Ministry of Labour promotes teamwork at Staff Development Day

Senior Minister Amory addressing ministry staff
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 24, 2018 (SKNIS): Staff from the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Affairs spent Friday (August 24) morning conducting an internal review in a bid to address challenges and increase the efficiency of employees as it works to deliver quality service to the public.

This was done during the 2nd Annual Professional Development Day held at the Conference Room of the Solid Waste Management Corporation. The theme was: “Igniting Team Spirit to Grow Together.” As such, the working sessions began with reports from the unit heads for Social Protection; Policy and Industrial Relations; Employment; and Occupational Safety and Health and Inspection. The finance officer also made a presentation. After the reporting was complete, Fitzroy Wilkin, Research Assistant specialized in Programme and Employment Development, guided the participants in training sessions including: Teamwork; and Developing Professionalism in Service.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Labour, Deon Webb, said activities such as the one being hosted is vital to maintaining a competent and motivated workforce.

“How productive we are at the workforce has a lot to do with the ability and the availability of opportunities to acquire and maintain relevant skills,” he stated. “Equipping the workforce with the skills required for the job of today and those of tomorrow, is a strategic concern of the Ministry and Department of Labour. Skills development enhances both people capabilities to work and their opportunities at work, offering more scope for creativity and satisfaction at work.”

Mr. Webb added that: “human resources are the key to propelling the Ministry and Department of Labour forward and enhancing efficient service delivery.”

Minister of Labour, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Affairs, Honourable Vance Amory, honed in on the theme and noted that it was important to firstly, establish a team and secondly, to get everyone on the same page.

“You can expose people to training but if they are not willing to accept the training or having been exposed to the training, apply the training, you are not going to get very far,” he said. “So it is being exposed to the training, having a willingness to accept the training and having the willingness to apply the training as it would have been given. That is what is going to make the difference and that is what’s going to make lighting the team spirit what it ought to be, and that is what is going to help you to grow together.”

The senior minister encouraged the staff to grow the level of trust between each other given that “no one knows everything about anything.” He said this will uplift the working environment and improve the service to the public.

The staff spent the afternoon doing literal team building exercises during 16 fun, competitive games, held at the Newtown Playing Field. These included needle and thread; lime and spoon; bobbing for apples; watermelon eating competition; sack race and more.
