CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, Aug 29.2018 – NEVIS’ Premier, Mark Brantley has revealed that his island will be swearing in a new Deputy Governor General this Friday.
The installation comes as outgoing Acting Deputy Governor General, Her Honour Mrs. Marjorie Morton prepares to demit office at the end of this month.
According to Brantley, she will be replaced by another female, Hyleta Liburd.
Mrs. Morton was sworn in back in September last year for a short stay in the position, but earlier this year it was extended, and she indicated to Premier Brantley that she was looking to leave at the end of August.
While addressing reporters at his press conference yesterday, Brantley confirmed that the career civil servant will be replaced by Hyleta Liburd who got the support of the Cabinet for the position.
“The Cabinet has looked at the matter, and the Cabinet has decided that the replacement for Her Honour Marjorie Morton is a woman. For us, that was important for us to continue that rich tradition of having women in these types of positions,’ explained Brantley.
Mrs. Liburd is a retired principal officer and served in the education for close to 39 years.
According to the Premier, she is the holder of a Bachelor’s Degree and was also a St. Kitts-Nevis Medal of Service awardee in 2005.
“These positions are positions of high significance, and they demand that we get for them people with absolutely the highest probity and integrity, people whose life will be an inspiration to others,” said Brantley.
Mrs. Liburd will be sworn in at a ceremony that will be held at the courthouse in downtown Charlestown.
