US Air force delivers Resources for Autism Centre in St. Kitts

By: EMU, Press Release
(EMU) – St. Kitts, August 31 2018 -- The US Embassy in Barbados through United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US Air Force, on Thursday, August 30, delivered supplies and materials to St. Kitts for the use in the Federation’s first Autism Centre.

Dr. Sheryl Rosin, a leading speech and language pathologist, stressed the need for early intervention in autistic children. Over the past four years, Dr. Rosin has been conducting workshops and free clinic screenings for families in St. Kitts and Nevis with autistic children.

Working closely with government, corporate and non-profit organizations, Dr. Rosin and her team sought approval by the Denton programme to enlist a C17 from Charleston, South Carolina, to deliver the goods to St. Kitts.

Upon the flight’s arrival at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, filled with enthusiasm and relief Dr. Rosin expressed delight at being able to receive the supplies.

“This is a very joyful day, a day that we have been waiting for,” she said, while at the same time expressing the need for having this service in Federation. She noted that it has been a long time coming and that the centre will surely serve the nation’s youth effectively.  “Our aim is to provide assessment and intervention, resources and services that each child can perform to their full potential.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Vincent Hodge echoed similar sentiments and noted that this service will be beneficial to all.

“Our families don’t have to leave St. Kitts and go abroad to receive the treatment [for autism], they are going to receive treatment right here,” he said. “The Ministry of Education is equally excited about this project reaching this point. We are eternally gratefully to Dr. Sheryl Rosin, we are indebted to her for her relentless pursuit in ensuring that this project happens.”

A few stakeholders that were instrumental in the project included the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, specifically the Ministries of Education and Health; Marshalls Restaurant; Mickey’s Hope Foundation; Source Consulting; Christophe Habour Foundation; and the University of Medicine Health Sciences.

The St. Kitts’ Spectrum Services Centre is located at the Industrial Site Pre-School and will be officially opened on Tuesday September 4.
