World Alzheimer's Month 2018

By: Alzheimer’s Association, Press Release

One year since the adoption of the WHO  global action plan on dementia, there has never been a more crucial time to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, and to challenge stigma.

30 August 2018  -- The theme for this World Alzheimer's Month (WAM) is "Every 3 seconds", a message which we think goes to the heart of the campaign. Someone in the world develops dementia every three seconds. This month of action is about raising awareness of the 50 million people currently living with dementia and emphasising that each of these people has a voice, a story, and family and friends around them also affected by dementia.

World Alzheimer's Month is a time for reflection but also a time for looking ahead and for taking action. The landmark WHO Global action plan on dementia came in just over a year ago, but we continue to face great challenges. Ensuring consistent and cross-regional progress towards the target of 146 countries developing national dementia plans by 2025 is a huge challenge. To be frank, progress so far has been slow. We're delighted that there are 30 plans in the pipeline but only two new national plans have been adopted within the past year. We need the equivalent of 15 new plans a year, and we need to work harder than ever to hold governments to account to ensure this happens.

So this World Alzheimer's Month join us in our campaign to raise awareness and tackle the stigma that still surrounds dementia. On the World Alzheimer's Month website we have a full toolkit to support your activities, your events and advocacy work, including posters, social media materials and key messages. Also remember to use the hashtags #Every3seconds, #WorldAlzMonth, #WAM2018 and share with us your stories, so that we can amplify them and let everyone know how much is going on around the world.

On 1 September we are delighted to be officially launching our current-affairs documentary film 'Every three seconds'. This film, developed with ITN Productions, shares the same name as this year's campaign - Every three seconds. It is available on our website and features some of the truly inspiring work that is taking place around the world in research, care and in new technology.

    World Alzheimer Report 2018:

On 21 September, World Alzheimer's Day, we will also be launching our 2018 World Alzheimer's Report: The State of the Art of Dementia Research: New frontiers. The report takes a fresh approach. We commissioned the journalist, writer and broadcaster, Christina Patterson, to interview 20 of the leading lights in dementia research across the globe and the final report is an overview of where we are currently - the hopes and frustrations, the barriers, and the ground-breaking work being undertaken. We'll send you more details nearer the launch date.
