Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 5, 2018 – Thousands of St. Kitts and Nevis students into the first week of a new school year, have been encourage to aim high when setting their goals and to do everything they can to meet them.

“With a positive attitude, passion, perseverance and focus, I am here to tell you that you can make a real difference and impact in your families, your communities, your nation and even the world,” said Leader of the Opposition, Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Dr. Douglas, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher 6 (Newton Ground to Harris’) also encouraged parents and teachers to cherish and appreciate the “precious souls who are in your care and to remember that our children are watching and listening as they learn and we must lead by example.”

“The family is the first arena of social interaction in which our children gain an understanding of what is acceptable and unacceptable social behaviour, how to relate to persons in authority and how to respond to conflict. As parents we should model the kind of behaviour we want to see more of in our children and to provide them with the security of knowing that they are loved unconditionally,” said Dr. Douglas, during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Leader” on Kyss 102.5 FM on Tuesday.

Dr. Douglas said teachers and school administrators should view every hour that they spend with children as an opportunity to mold and shape a life into the kind of human beings who “we would want to have as our neighbours and leaders. The old African proverb says that “it takes a village to raise and child” and we must all take this role very seriously. Children are gifts from God who are offered temporarily to our care and we must be good stewards.”

He wished the children from pre-school to secondary and college levels a wonderful, successful and safe school year.
Dr. Douglas said he is deeply aware of the vast and boundless potential that are capable of achieving as a people and as a nation.

“Every single one of our children has something unique to offer. It is our responsibility as adults, school faculty and administrators and as legislators to provide them with the nurturing and enabling environment that would stimulate and inspire them to accomplish their dreams,” said Dr. Douglas, who visited students at the St. Paul’s Primary school and will be visiting others as well as the week progresses.
