Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 5, 2018 – A diplomat, two educators and a former employee at the J. N. France General Hospital, all who died recently, were thanked for their services to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Leader of the Opposition, Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas paid tribute to His Excellency Cedric Harper, former educators, Clement “Bouncin” Williams and Vincent Inniss and Mrs. Beatrice Sargeant.

Labelling Mr. Clement “Bouncin” Williams and H.E. Cedric Harper as national icons, Dr. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Leader” on Tuesday night, first paid tribute to the multi-talented ‘Bouncin’ Williams, “renowned nationally as a cultural icon who was a champion of the creative arts through his work as Artistic Director and Producer of the National Players Theatre Movement.”

“Mr. Williams was also an excellent and prolific playwright whose productions were a delight for enthusiasts around the Federation and the region. He was an educator in the fields of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and author of the book “My Early Life on St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Dr. Douglas, who added:

“Clement “Bouncin” Williams was a giant of a man whose contribution to the historical, social and educational development of the Federation would never be forgotten. His passing is a tremendous loss to the Labour Movement and the wider society of St. Kitts and Nevis. I would like to take this opportunity to extend sincere condolences to his wife, Cynthia and his children Jihan and Jomo Williams and other members of his extended family,” said Dr. Douglas.

Expressing condolences to the family and loved ones of Cedric Harper, who served for the past seventeen years as the High Commissioner of Jamaica and until 2014, as non-resident Ambassador to Cuba, Dr. Douglas noted he had the honour in 2001 to appoint Mr. Harper to those diplomatic roles.

“Mr. Harper was also a personal friend whom I greatly admired. I will always remember him for the humble, yeoman service he provided to me and other UWI students who attended Mona, UWI where he was the Warden of Irvin Hall and also to our students from the Federation studying in Cuba. He will be greatly missed and my heart goes out to his children Adrienne and Douglas and other family members,” said the Leader of the Opposition.

Dr. Douglas in his tribute to Mr. Vincent Inniss noted he was the first Director of the St. Kitts and Nevis Technical College and was appointed by the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw himself.

“Mr. Inniss also wrote the column “Viewpoint” in the Labour Spokesman for over forty years. Mr. Inniss was brother to another national icon, former Governor Sir Probyn Inniss who passed away a few years ago.

“I take the opportunity to extend my deepest sympathies to his children, Layton, Darlene and Amy Inniss and other members of the Inniss family,” said former prime minster Dr. Douglas.

In paying tribute to Mrs. Beatrice Sargeant of Finnees Avenue, Dr. Douglas recalled her years of service on the auxiliary staff at the J. N. France General Hospital.

“Mrs. Sargeant was one of the persons who i admired for her fond and loving support. Mrs. Sargeant provided public service as one of the managers in the auxiliary service at our Joseph N. France General Hospital.

“Mrs. Sargeant provided the necessary support not only to the patients but also to the nurses and the other members of the hospital staff. Today, we remember her and we express to her children and other family members, our deep condolences on her passing,” said Dr. Douglas.

He said Mrs. Sargeant was a stalwart of the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Movement.
