BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - LAVERN DAVIS, a name synonymous with hair care locally and internationally, has extended her service to encompass a number of factors that will enhance mannerism and character-building.

Naturally, Davis is a very passionate person, beaming with knowledge and experience as her start in her professional career came at the tender age of 18, just when she became a certified Cosmetologist.

She offers more than hair care at her salon and is always willing to give advice or engage in warm conversations with her clients. That is why she has decided to begin finesse classes, which will last six weeks for young girls ages 12-16.

‘Lavern’s Important Guide to Finesse’ will offer training to young women in the areas of Etiquette, Self-Grooming, Hygiene, Health, Self Esteem & Motivation, Communication Skills, Efficiency, Responsibility, Customer Service, Interpersonal Skills, Multi-tasking and Beautification.

The entrepreneur said that the classes would bring back that true image of being a young woman, which seems to be missing in today’s young females.

She said that her classes and guidelines will help them to become well-mannered and of good character.

Davis said she came across a number of young women whom she describes as “rough” and lacking maturity.

“No matter how young you are, if you’re not ready for the business world you wouldn’t survive.  The earlier you are focused on what you want to excel in, the better.

“I had to choose between being a child and owning a business,” Davis said.  “You have to be more mature in the business world and cut out certain stuff you normally would do. Beauty and brains take you a long way and I cannot just sit back and watch, with all my knowledge and experience, when I can assist them,” she added.

Davis said that having a 12-year-old daughter has also motivated her to begin the classes, as she is molding and guiding her offspring and is seeing results.

She plans to begin the classes in September – one hour twice weekly.

Davis said that she would be the facilitator of the classes and, at times, she would invite special guests to speak on various related topics.

She indicated her hopes that, as a result of the classes, the young women who attend would grow up to be independent women.

“It’s difficult being a woman, and even more so a single woman when everyone thinks that the opposite sex gives you everything,” she said.

Davis said that being raised in a home and community that placed a premium on values has impacted her life positively.

“Even if one comes from a privileged home, that does not mean you come from a home of good character; it just means you’re privileged with material stuff,” Davis said. “Speaking well is important…it’s not just about being pretty,” she added.

Davis mentioned that the young girls who attend her finesse classes would eventually change the way they speak to others and conduct themselves respectably and decently.

“I am hoping they will become more compassionate towards others and tone down the way they speak to people, including their parents and teachers,” she said.
