BVI, 6 September 2018 - Preparations have begun for the University of Science Arts and Technology (USAT) to open the doors of the Territory’s first offshore medical school next year.

The institution operates a campus in Montserrat and is headed by President and Professor, Dr. OrienTulp.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron E. Walwyn expressed his satisfaction to see this long time goal come to fruition.  He said such achievement can only be described as a triumph to the Territory.

Honourable Walwyn said, “I am happy to finally see the day of the establishment of a medical school on our shores. The medical school is indeed a step forward for the area of education and medicine, and once USAT is up and running the economy will be in a position to reap the benefits, through the rentals of property, and the creation of new jobs. This initiative is certainly a triumph for the Territory”.

“We are satisfied with the choice made, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Dr. Tulp, as they develop an institution that will attract students from all over the world to our shores,” the minister added.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr. Marcia Potter explained that this important achievement was obtained after the passing of the Higher Education Licensing Act was approved in 2015.

Dr. Potter said six applications were received from medical institutions before the Act was approved. She said only two interested parties remained following the approval and the establishment of a Higher Education Licensing Board. The University of Science Arts and Technology (USAT) was chosen after the adequate investigations were conducted.

The university will be offering a number of programmes at both the Bachelors and Post Graduate levels such as Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery, Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor, Master and Doctor of Nursing, Master of Pharmacy, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Master and Doctor of Public Health and Bachelor, Master and Doctor of Education.
