Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 26, 2018 (RSCNPF): Students from the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) spent Saturday morning (September 22) at the Mol-Phil Explorers Camp Site participating in several activities with the children.
As part of RUSVM Day of Service activities, about 20 students travelled to Phillips' where the Mol-Phil Explorers meet weekly. The RUSVM Day of Service is observed on the Saturday following the federation's Independence Day.
Coordinator for this year's RUSVM Day of Service activities, Caitlyn Crawford, said it was only the second time the day was being observed.
"We started this event last year and this is the second one that we've done. We've been planning this with Inspector Isles for at least nine (9) months now on what she needed and what she could benefit from and having a garden in her area was something that she could really benefit from and it was something feasible for us to do in a four-hour span of time. We get here, we give them about four or five hours that we can do stuff for them and that's kinda how we started doing this," Ms. Crawford said.
She explained that they assisted the group create garden boxes which they also painted, filled with dirt and planted seeds in. They spent time playing different games with the Explorers and handed over a $600 donation from Michael's Burgers as well.
"We came out here to build some gardens and we donated some sport equipment for the kids to play with when they come to meet at the grounds again. We wanted to go ahead and teach them responsibility and kind of occupy their time on weekends to kind of keep them out of trouble so we helped them plant some herb and some squash and things like that they can take care of and hopefully grow eventually," Ms. Crawford added.
Founder and Coordinator of the Mol-Phil Explorer Club, Inspector Rosemary Isles-Joseph, expressed her gratitude to the group and assured the students that the group would take care of both the garden and the equipment.
