October 2nd, 2018 -- Newly promoted Old Road Jets produced a shock win over Elco Ltd. St. Peters, winning 2-0 on Saturday in the National Bank Premier League at the Warner Park Football Stadium. Both goals came from Tiquanny Williams in the 29th and 30th minute of the match. Technical Manager of the Old Road jets said they improved on their defense from their last game where they lost to Village. He also said this unit is made up of young players and now they will be working on their fitness so they can produce better results in the league.
Meanwhile, in one of the first big match ups of 2018-2019 National Bank Premier League season, defending champions Rams Village Superstars defeated Flow 4G Cayon Rockets 2-0. Playing with just ten men after former Cayon player, now Village star Kevin Benjamin was sent off in the closing stages of the first half picking up two yellow cards, the defending champions were determined to get the win and got the breakthrough goal in the 76th minute through Travis Somersall. One minute later Tahir Hanley made it 2-0. This is more of a revenge win for Village after losing the first chance of silverware for the season—the President’s Cup, at the start of the season to Cayon. Village had lost that match 4-3.
Assistant Coach for Village Stephen Clarke said after the match it was his team’s determination and grit that got them the win. “Congrats to Cayon. They played a very good game, but my players are very determined,” he said. “We work really hard on the training ground and they really went out and displayed it.” Coach Clarke said they were not afraid they would lose the match with 10 men. “We were confident we could have kept a clean sheet tonight. We just needed the attack to create and score one goal and fortunately we got two,” he said.
Assistant Coach for Cayon Jazza Buchanan said there is some work to be done with his team for them to improve on this performance. “We took a back seat and tried to do too many things. Some of the things we tried to do were not planned from the drawing board. It’s just for us to go back and look at this and try to correct some of the mistakes we made,” Buchanan said. He suggested that there was a bit too much individual play in their performance and this will be corrected for the next match.
