October 2nd, 2018 -- Eight new students were inducted into the Susanna Lee High School Scholarship on Thursday 27th September 2018 during a ceremony held at the E. St John Payne Annex, Social Security Headquarters in Basseterre.
In its 35th year, the scholarship program will benefit the following students from first to fifth form and onto local colleges upon acceptance.
The High School inductees are:

Shericia Miller Washington Archibald High School
Dominion Woodley Basseterre High School
Rhyanna Farrell Cayon High School
Tei-Naaki Davis Saddlers Secondary School
Hazika Samuel Verchilds High School
Jaquori Isaac Charlestown Secondary School
Tyra Phillip Gingerland Secondary School
Board Member and Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, Mrs. Jacqueline Brookes Jeffers delivered the Welcome Remarks during the ceremony. In her remarks, Mrs. Brookes Jeffers implored the students to remain focused, make the right choices and be careful of the company they keep. The Scholarship Chairperson also announced proudly the results of the CSEC passes and
congratulated the students and parents for their efforts and continued commitment towards education.
Acting Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Marilyn Johnson shared words of encoragment and offered the following advice. “Develop and maintain a passion for learning. It is this passion that will keep you motivated during the difficult time. It is also important to take responsibility for your own learning. Don’t sit around waiting on your teachers and others to teach you. Use your text book,
make good use of the internet and other resources”, the CFO ended.
Following the Acting Deputy Director remarks, Senior Minister and Minister of Social Security, the Hon. Vance Amory addressed the gathering, noting the significane of the education investment by the Social Security Board. “Today we are here at the beginning of a new round of investment. One of the mandate of Social Security is to transform the social and economic development of this country. This investment in young people is part of the fulfillment of that mandate.” The Minister further echoed the expectation of Social Security for students to demonstrate the discipline and the dedication to study and follow the instructions of their teachers, family and well-wishers.
Presentation of certificates to the new inductees was done by Patron Ms. Susanna Lee, while Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Hon. Shawn K. Richards presented certificates to the alumni who have been accepted by the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. Inductee Dominion Woodley of the Basseterre High School, deliverd words of appreciation on behalf of the new
awardees.
The Invocation was delivered by the Manager of the MIS Department, Mr. James Bradshaw, the Vote of Thanks by Administrative Assistant, Ms. Karen Crossman while the ceremony was gracefully chaired by Mr. Walwyn Chiverton. Inspector, Mr Aleks Condell, belted out a saxophone rendition during the signing of the Comittment Documents.
Since 1983, the Social Security Board has been offering High School Scholarships to students with great potential and whom without the necessary support may not realize their fullest potential. The program has a growing scholarship alumni of 204 students. To date, Social Security has invested over $2.2 million in the education of our youths.
