Tuesday 2nd October, 2018 – (St. Kitts) - The Rotary Community Corp of Basseterre (RCCB), launched its inaugural Back to School drive on August 19, 2018. This initiative gave the community-driven group an opportunity to give back by providing school supplies to the nation’s youth who may otherwise not have all the necessary supplies for the 2018-2019 school year. The students targeted were those attending primary school who resided in the Sandy Point, Old Road, Boyds, McKnight, St. Peter’s, Taylors, Buckleys, Newtown, Lodge and Cayon communities.
As this was the group’s first back to school drive, RCCB developed a criteria that stipulated that each team member must nominate two students and provide information as to why each child should be selected. The group would then choose one child from each person who would receive the package. The children were gifted with exercise books, pens, pencils and rulers. The RCCB would like to give special thanks to the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority Sports and Culture Club, (SCASPA) who collaborated with them to make the drive possible.
The Rotary Community Corp of Basseterre also took part in the Mercury Monitoring Survey conducted among Women of Childbearing age in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as a pilot project. The primary aim of the International POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutant) Elimination, IPEN, pilot project is meant to raise awareness about global mercury levels in SIDS around the world of which the organization’s main goal is a toxic free future. IPEN is a global network with more than 700 public interest Non-Government Organizations participating in over 100 countries. Its eight regional hubs operate in Africa, Asia, Aran, Eastern Europe/Caucasus/Central Asian and Latin America in all six languages of the United Nations. The president of the RCCB, Ms. Jonelle Rawlins, expressed her concerns about mercury pollution in women and that people living the Caribbean are not educated about such topics. She felt that this was an important move for the group to heighten the awareness, on a growing international issue.
The Rotary Community Corp of Basseterre (RCCB) plans to continue to aid and assist the communities of the island, as the group’s passion and purpose is the development of the nation by effecting change through the community. Ms. Rawlins thanks the RCCB Directors and members Wycliffe Mitchum, Norrie Dore, Steven Browne, Amoy Nisbett, Naomi Brownbill, Mechelle Bryan, Valencia Rawlins, Gary Williams, Vernon Elliott and Gilmer Richardson for their dedication to the RCCB and to the aforementioned projects.
