3 October 2018 -- On Saturday 29 September, Dr Jimmy Fletcher – a former Minister of Public Service, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology in St Lucia – led a workshop on Governance and Negotiation at the British High Commission in Bridgetown.

Over 30 Chevening Alumni from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean attended the workshop and heard Dr Fletcher speak about different negotiation experiences at the climate change conference in Paris in 2015, and the importance of good governance. The participants also heard from several other key-note speakers, including UWI’s Director of CERMES, Dr Adrian Cashman; and Dr Lennox Honychurch who was part of the team that negotiated Dominica’s independence. Also speaking on international trade negotiation was Dr Jan Yves Remy, Deputy Director of the UWI Shridath Ramphal Centre.

British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Janet Douglas, opened the workshop. She described the event as “an excellent initiative that brought together bright minds from across the Caribbean to discuss important issues.”

A Chevening Alumnus himself, Dr Fletcher said, “This was an important opportunity for this generation of leaders to discuss what they can do to take their region forward.”  He implored the group to be engaged and committed to the development of the Caribbean.
