I-Soursop proud of his recent historic win

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AUGUST 1, 2009 is a very symbolic and memorable day for I-Soursop, for he became the first non-resident Kittitian on Nevis to have been crowned the Culturama Senior Calypso Monarch in the event’s 35-year history.

SKNVibes PEP spoke briefly with the calypsonian, whose real name is Calvin Johnson, who said: “Thirty-five years was not on my mind; what was on my mind was that every carnival three calysonians come over from Nevis for our Calypso Monarch competition and, as a result, I always get thrown out. So, I went with that in mind and show them how it feels.”

He performed two songs titled ‘Too small’ and ‘Don’t lose it'.

According to Johnson, ‘Too small’ is a universal song for anywhere that has crime, such as robbery, kidnappings and killings.

‘Don’t lose it’, on the other hand, he said, is about Culturama…“telling you how it started because in slavery days the only way to protest against the master was to sing a song”.

Johnson said he is not one to get hyped but he feels extremely proud of his recent win. He is also the reigning Ring Bang Calypso King after successfully defending his 2008 title.

The newly-crowned Culturama Senior Calypso King is scheduled to leave the island today (Aug. 6) for Anguilla for a Leeward Island Calypso competition to be held on Saturday.
