IICA, MDS and FLACSO signed an agreement to generate knowledge related to productive inclusion and cooperative undertakings
Brasilia, 10 October 2018 (IICA) -- An agreement between the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Ministry of Social Development (MDS) of Brazil and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), signed on October 9, will drive and promote policies and programs related to food security, access to water, cooperative undertakings and productive inclusion, with a focus on the leading role played by rural women.
The partnership between the three institutions will allocate about BRL 900,000 to training sessions, studies, research and actions aimed at developing public policies on family farming as well as food and nutritional security. To this end, a memorandum of understanding was signed by Alberto Beltrame, Minister of Social Development of Brazil; Jorge Werthein, Special Advisor of IICA, on behalf of the Institute’s Director General, Manuel Otero; and Salete Valesan Camba, Director of FLACSO Brazil. In the document, the institutions express their commitment to sharing information on initiatives and programs carried out in the social sector, and to generating knowledge and mutual learning opportunities related to gender relationships in rural areas of Latin America.
The agreement will drive support for social development policies related to gender and rurality, with special emphasis on social participation. According to Jorge Werthein, cooperation will be provided through the sharing of experiences on and good practices in family farming as well as food and nutritional security, in order to strengthen the implementation and evaluation of policies and programs in areas of common interest. “This joint initiative, which I am certain will be successful, will enable us to reflect on rural women in a different manner. First, we will apply a methodology in Brazil, and then we will share its results within the framework of South-South cooperation, in order to expand the methodology to other countries,” stated Werthein.
The Ministry’s policy, which includes programs on productive inclusion, cooperative undertakings, the building of tanks, and rainwater catchment, provides women with various options for public and private empowerment, which sets an excellent example for the Southern Common Market. “The joint initiative between MDS, IICA and FLACSO sheds light on the almost hidden work carried out by women in the field. Rural women play an important role in the economy, at times working double or even triple shifts. We must better acknowledge their role and strive to develop State rather than government policies,” stated minister Beltrame.
“The topic of rural women will be dealt with from a different perspective, which will enable us to prepare solutions and public policy proposals for the benefit of women who live and work in the field. Subsequently, the results could be replicated in order to generate the same benefits in other Latin American and Caribbean countries,” explained Salete Valesan Camba.
