Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 11, 2018 (SKNIS): On October 04, while updating the nation on matters of national interests at his monthly press conference, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, paused to acknowledge two well-known older persons in the community who were specially invited guests in honour of the Month of Older Persons, which is celebrated in the Federation for the entire month of October.
“This month we commemorate the month of older persons. I have the greatest respect for our older persons, their contribution to nation building, and their role as mentors, advisers, as repositories of our culture, tradition and values,” said Prime Minister Harris, as he acknowledged John Paul and Alice Pemberton with gift baskets as tokens of appreciation.
Ms. Pemberton, who is from Central Basseterre, was elated to receive her beautiful bouquet arrangement and gift basket and expressed her thanks to the prime minister.
“I would like to tell you thanks very much,” she said. Mr. Paul also showed his appreciation.
The prime minister said that the tokens for the two selected seniors is just one way to show appreciation and to honour older persons during the Month of Older Person.
The International Day of Older Person is observed on October 1 each year. The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 1990.
The theme of the 2018 commemoration is “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions”.
