Prime Minister Harris calls the Opposition Leader’s position on national security into question

By: OPM, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 12, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The recent attempt by the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Denzil Douglas, to undermine the national security framework of the nation, has been described as “desperate, hypocritical and shameful” by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, as it was revealed that the Opposition Leader had written to the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) protesting the perceived deployment of law enforcement personnel from the Regional Security System (RSS) to St. Kitts and Nevis.

In a letter dated 9th October, 2018, addressed to Chairman of the OECS Authority, Dr. the Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, Dr. Douglas sought to gain the regional body’s support in his attempt to prevent outside assistance from the RSS to beef up the overall security operations in the country.

Speaking earlier today [October 12] on the People’s Voice radio programme on Sugar City FM, Prime Minister Harris said he finds it difficult to fathom why the Opposition Leader or any right-thinking resident or citizen would stand against the prospect of having an increased security presence in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Let’s assume that we were doing that, why is that a problem for him? Why is that not a good thing for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to get the fullest possible support in terms of law and order in the country? Does he want mayhem in the country; does he want lawlessness to prevail in the country? Why is Denzil Douglas so angry that law enforcement is being enhanced in St. Kitts and Nevis?” Dr. Harris questioned.

Dr. Harris concluded that “Denzil Douglas is a bitter man at this point and he has no shame,” particularly because Dr. Douglas himself has relied upon the services of the RSS in the past.

Prime Minister Harris, who is the Minister of National Security, stressed that in his opinion only the criminals and those who harbour and support criminals should be concerned when law enforcement is being strengthened.

While the Opposition Leader’s letter went on to accuse the Dr. Timothy Harris-led administration of becoming a dictatorship, the prime minister reminded the listening audience that it took the intervention of several OECS Prime Ministers to convince Dr. Douglas of relinquishing his grip on political power after the majority of the electorate in St. Kitts and Nevis voted for change in the 2015 election.
