Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 15, 2018 (SKNIS): The Department of Youth Empowerment will host its 3rd Annual Island-Wide Bike Ride on Sunday, November 04, as part of the activities for Youth Month 2018.

The family-oriented event has grown significantly since it was introduced as it represents a way for families to bond, friends to socialise or challenge each other, and individuals to get a good workout. Whatever the motivation, the consensus from participants is that the event is fun-filled.

Officials are catering for 150 persons this year. Youth Officer, Sharon Cannonier, said that it is important for persons to register with the department as soon as possible, particularly those persons who do not own a bicycle. The customary arrangement has been made with two private companies for bicycle rentals. Adults registering will pay $35, while persons 17 and under will pay $20 for rentals.

Ms. Cannonier pointed out that rental costs have increased and the fee does not represent the full cost of renting the bicycle. Subsidies from the department will still be in place and the charge is merely to help offset the fees for 60 bicycle rentals. It is mandatory for individuals using their own bicycle to register free of cost.

Water and beverage breaks, rest stops and medical stations will be available at different points along the route. The Island-Wide Bike Ride begins at 6 a.m. at the roundabout by the R. L. Bradshaw International Airport, travels east via Cayon and ends at Port Zante in Basseterre. Refreshments will be served after.

Registration sheets are available at all primary and secondary schools, as well as the Department of Youth Empowerment on Cayon Street. Telephone 467-1393 or 662-6054 for additional information.
