Appreciating Different Learning Styles: Differentiated Instructions and Assessment Strategies

By: MoE, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, October 22, 2018: The Ministry of Education recognizes that successful teachers require on-going support with meeting the learning needs of students. To this end, a select group of teachers from the various high and primary schools within the Federation were trained, October 15 -19, in Differentiated Instruction and Assessment Strategies.

The workshop, held daily at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel’s conference room, advanced the efforts of the Ministry of Education to implement differentiated instructions and curriculum delivery in the classrooms. At this workshop over 150 teachers learnt how to ensure that the understanding and learning objective is met for all students at varying learning levels.

According to Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Darryll Lloyd, “This professional development opportunity prepares the participants to monitor and evaluate teachers in the understanding and application of Differentiated Instruction and assessments strategies to improve student performance.”

A three person facilitation team, headed by, Dr. Joan Spencer-Ernandez a Special Education Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, School of Education asserted that the data-driven strategies learnt will focus on maximising learning opportunities and outcomes.  “This is necessary to assist in the improvement of all student performance and especially the matter of equity,’ stated Dr. Spencer-Ernandez.

She continued, “The concern for the Ministry of Education is the matter of equity and reaching every child at his or her level to ensure that their potential is truly maximised.”

The participants felt that the diverse collection of teachers mimicked that of the classroom and created an experience like no other.  Visual Arts teacher at the Washington Archibald High School, Micheleina Charles Hazelle stated, “It was extremely informative; we learnt how to differentiate our classrooms based on learning profiles and learning preference and styles. We can now take the information back to our classrooms and enhanced the productivity of our learners.”
