MoE Receives $100,000.00 from the Government of Republic of China (Taiwan) to Fund Human Resource Development

    (EMU) – St. Kitts, October 24, 2018: Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Tom Chih-Chiang Lee, today (Wednesday, 24th October) presented a cheque valuing US$100,000.00 to the Ministry of Education to fund the 2018-2019 Human Resources Development Project (HRDP). 

     

    HRDP is a federal programme dedicated to providing aid to students who consistently exhibit satisfactory behaviour and exemplify satisfactory academic performance.  Additionally, recipients household income should be below the average socio-economic status and not be holders of any other financial academic award. 

    Over the past twenty years the Government of Republic of China (Taiwan) (ROC) has been issuing the grant which provides sponsorship towards the Human Resources Development Project.  Since gaining Independence in 1983, the Federation has invested considerably in human and material resources in education with the assistance of the Government and people of the ROC. 

    On hand to receive the donation was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards, who assured that the awardees would be urged to accept the scholarship with a sense of responsibility and continue to be a respectful representation among their peers.

    “These funds do go a long way and you are doing a great job in assisting our students develop themselves academically,” assured Minister Richards.  He stated that from the contribution a plethora of nationals stand to benefit.  “Not only will this contribution be issued locally but there are students who are pursuing studies overseas who will benefit from this donation.” 
     
    During brief remarks Ambassador Lee of the ROC highlighted the collaboration between the two countries in areas including education, sports, agriculture and ICT. ;.  He added that he was particularly enthused about the very substantial and sustainable investment in Education.
     
    “Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis are similar, we do not have many natural resources, but we do have the human aspect, so it is important to develop our human resources. This is why we are willing to share our expertise in this area.” Ambassador Lee continued by announcing that in 2019 there would be an increase in the donation amount to assist more students. “I am happy to inform you, (Minister Richards) that starting next year we are going to increase the amount to US $120,000.00.” 
     
    It was revealed that a scholarship presentation ceremony will be held in November, to distribute the disbursements to students from, primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions who meet the requirements. 
     
    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, William Hodge and First Secretary Daniel Kuo were present at the brief ceremony.
