Walk for Cancer

Press Release

Massive crowd for Breast Cancer Walk Saturday

Friday, 26th October, 2018 -- Organizers of the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, are anticipating a much larger turnout of participants when the event is held on Saturday, 27th October.

President of the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, Pamela Mary Armstrong, has reported that over 2,000 persons have registered for the event and her team has had to reprint shirts on two occasions to help satisfy the huge demands.

She said that this response has been overwhelming and her foundation is optimistic that it would be better placed to offer support to more women who are in need of assistance.

The president was also very generous in her praise for the title sponsor of the Pink Walk, saying that the Insurance Company of the West Indies, ICWI, has been a true friend and willing partner.

This will be the third year that ICWI will be serving as major sponsor, said Armstrong, but she added that the company has been closely working with the foundation to find new ways to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer.

Business Development Officer at the local ICWI office, Nordia Dobbs, said “ICWI, is very concerned about the increasing levels of cancer in St. Kitts & Nevis.”

“Too many of our people are dying from this disease,” she added.

This year, said Dobbs, ICWI has decided to invest even more in the fight against breast cancer.

“We therefore re-introduced our Road Angel Program to help give more money to help women who have had the misfortune of being diagnosed with the disease. We are therefore very proud to donate 5% of every new Road Angel Policy to the Essence of Hope Foundation,” stated the representative.

Dobbs explained that this added contribution is necessary because they also want to ensure that more women have the means to get themselves tested with mammograms and benefit from other support services, such as counselling.

The ICWI official said it is time for the entire country to double its efforts to prevent this disease and to save lives.

The fight against cancer, must be one that involves ALL in society, and ICWI understands that it has a social responsibility join others in the fight against what is one of the most common causes of death among Kittitians and Nevisians.

ICWI also announced that participants attending the walk can qualify to win one free year of insurance, from a special raffle amongst participants at Saturday’s walk.

Both ICWI and Essence of Hope say they are already making plans to mark the 10th anniversary of the walk in 2019.

This year's theme is Socks & Shades and the walk begins at 6:00 am, from the Caribbean Cinemas and ending at the Frigate Bay lawns.
