BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SANGRENA HARRIS, a 20-year-old Postal Counter Clerk, has captured the 2009 Miss Anguilla Pageant from among a field of four contestants.

The other contestants were Delvicia Mac Donna, Kishma King and Samantha Connor Moore who was adjudged First Runner-up.

The pageant was held last evening (Aug. 6) before a huge crowd at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Village.

Harris’ qualities are evident that she will make an excellent queen as she is filled with radiant hope, genteel beauty, and blessed with creativity and talent.

She grew up in the quiet and secluded North Side of Anguilla. At the age of five, her education journey began at The Valley Primary School from which she moved on to the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School.

She was one of the youngest students to qualify for the Leeward Island Debating team of Anguilla at the age of 15. She was committed to dance and demonstrated this through her involvement in the All-ah-Wee Young Theatre Players and The Trendsetters Dance Group.

Her love for public speaking eventually led her to compete in various pageants, which include Miss Valentine 2005 and First Runner-up in The Miss CCB Talented Teen of that same year.

Through her dedication to the Anguilla National Youth Council, she was named National Youth Ambassador of Anguilla in 2008. Harris also continued to represent her island on the debating frontier and was given the title of Team Captain of the 2008 Leeward Island Debating Team.

Harris endeavours to further her education in the fall of 2010 with hopes of attaining a degree in Education, a means by which to further empower the youth of Anguilla.

The carnival action in Anguilla continues today (August 7) with the Parades Through the Street event and will continue with the Last Lap Sunrise Jam tomorrow from 4:00 a.m. Later in the evening, the Leeward Island Calypso Competition will be held, in which King Konris and King I-Soursop will represent St. Kitts and Nevis respectively.

The Champions of Champions Boat Race will be held on Sunday (Aug. 9) and will conclude the carnival celebrations.

The ‘Unite & Fete it’s Culture Time’ themed festival began on Sunday, July 26  with the Miss Anguilla Swimsuit & Costume Competition.
