Ministry of Sport in St. Kitts welcomes increased interest by community-oriented groups and individuals

Permanent Secretary Stanley Knight
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 31, 2018 (SKNIS): The redevelopment project at the Tabernacle Playing Field is shaping up to be an exciting project for the government and community residents who are collaborating to improve the functionality of the facility.

In June 2018, the government mounted outdoor LED sport lighting that enhanced the usability of the playing field by accommodating activities in the evening and night time.

There are also plans to construct bathrooms and bleachers, repair the concrete fence, and to replace the turf. The estimated cost of the aforementioned work is $1.65 million.

Notably, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Stanley Knight, said the community stepped forward to fund the expansion of the construction, to include a team/meeting room, a concession stand, and a VIP area. Mr. Knight said this type of collaboration is most welcome.

“This is the partnership that we want. We would love it if more communities can actually come forward,” Mr. Knight said, adding, “We love the ownership aspect by the community.”

The permanent secretary noted that contributions can be in cash or kind. He cited a recent meeting with community members of Half Way Tree, who expressed a strong interest in playing an active role in the maintenance and upkeep of a recently installed basketball court. There was also the volunteer work performed by residents of Boyds who stepped forward to repair a broken pipe at the playing field.

“That says to us that persons are beginning to appreciate the contribution that we are making in the communities and therefore they are taking the responsibility of valuing that, and also adding value to it on their own,” Mr. Knight added.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Sport remains open to partnering with individuals or interest groups willing to positively contribute to national development.
