Basseterre, St. Kitts – For the first time in the 14-year history of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga Primary School Spelling Bee competition co-champions were crowned. Emerging victorious were Alisha Jalim of Saddlers Primary School and Hannah Williams of the St. Kitts Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School.

Before the spelling battle ensued, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, The Honourable Shawn K Richards, highlighted the importance of spelling to reading and literacy overall. He encouraged the teachers, parents and guardians to continue to inculcate the spirit of spelling and reading in their youths and applauded the student spellers for being their respective
    schools’ representatives.

“The ultimate victory in a competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and got the most out of what you have performed,” said Ms Natasha St. Juste, President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, in her opening remarks. “Hence, every participant here is a winner irrespective of any result.”

This year 22 of the 23 primary schools on St. Kitts participated in the competition and were supported by a cheering audience of over 400 persons at the ECCB Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium. Following 5 rounds of great spelling to select the top ten spellers, it was adjudged that all 22 spellers had made it to the Elimination Rounds; another first for the competition.

As the Elimination Rounds progressed Alisha and Hannah remained. Following 20 rounds of spelling, they were declared co-champions, as per the competition rules. As the audience cheered, the cochamps could be seen hugging and congratulating each other in an amazing display of comradery and respect.

The two Spelling Bee champs received a lovely trophy, EC$750, Seven Seas, Sun Top and Milo products (compliments RAM’s), cases of Dasani water (compliments KOSCAB), cases of Smalta (compliments Carib Brewery) and Harper’s Office Depot gift vouchers. The winning schools and teachers who assisted the spellers with their preparations also received cash awards. The third place speller Mr D’Jaaden Dunrod of Cayon Primary School also received cash and in-kind prizes. All spellers received Rotary Club of Liamuiga certificates of participation, refreshments and goodie bags compliments of RAM’S Supermarket, and gifts compliments of Massy United Insurance and Harper’s Office Depot.
