(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) -- As Suriname marks its 43rd Anniversary of Independence, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed appreciation for the country’s steadfast leadership in important areas for building the regional integration movement.

“…we in the Community are highly appreciative of Suriname’s steadfast leadership within the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet in the areas of Culture, Gender, Youth and Sport, all of which are important elements in the identity and spirit of CARICOM as we work towards a strengthened and more integrated Community for all,” CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said in a congratulatory message to Suriname’s President HE Desiré Bouterse.

The Secretary-General also highlighted Suriname’s significant growth and achievements since independence, ‘fueled in large measure by the cultural diversity, unity and indomitable will of its people’. He said their determination and unwavering commitment to build their nation have borne fruit.

Suriname attained independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975.
