BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, December 7, 2018 (S.T.E.P.) -- A member of the Board of Directors of Ade’s Place, Dr Robertine Chaderton, is commending the Federal Government for its continued support of the Greenlands-based institution that offers practical training to differently-abled young persons.
“I would like to thank the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for their contribution in that they continued to pay the salaries of the director for the Ade’s Place, Ms LaToya Merchant,” said Dr Chaderton. “She joined us recently, and she has done a very good job since she has been here.”
According Dr Chaderton, who made the remarks on Wednesday December 5 at the opening of the institution’s two-day Annual Open House, a new instructor from the Youth Skills Department, Ms Petra Sinclair also joined Ade’s Place and she been working with arts and craft. Since Ms Sinclair has been at the institution, quite a number of new items have come on stream this year.
“The government continues to pay the rent for this building and to assist with school meals,” added Dr Chaderton. “The trainees here are on the Skills Training Empowerment Programme (STEP), so they get a weekly stipend and it certainly has helped in their family situations.”
Minister of State for Health, Community Development, Gender Affairs and Social Services, Senator the Hon Wendy Phipps, who gave opening remarks at the Annual Open House, said Ade’s Place was a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that is partnering with the Government.
Present were His Excellency Tom Lee, resident Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan; Mr William Santos, Vice Counsellor, Embassy of Brazil; Rev Spencer Watts, Superintendent for the Wesleyan Holiness Church in the St. Kitts, Nevis and Saba District; and Pastor Rev Sylvester Herbert of the Basseterre and Conaree Wesleyan Holiness Churches.
“In addition we want to thank the Taiwanese Embassy because they continue to give us plants which we can sell,” noted Dr Chaderton. “They also made a monetary donation and for that we are very grateful, as it helps with some of the things we have to buy for the use and operation of this place.”
Ade’s Place continues to attract the attention of corporate citizens, and Dr Chaderton noted: “We had a new partner this year in Kittitian Hill. They also provided some of the plants which we have on sale, and this made a big difference to what we are able to collect.”
