‘Million-thanks’ welcome for millionth case in a single year at Carib Breweries

Prime Minister Harris and Minister Grant lift the millionth case of product for the year 2018 off the conveyor line
By: Peter Ngunjiri, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, December 15, 2018 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, and Minister of Tourism, International Trade, Industry and Commerce, the Hon Lindsay Grant, were in the house Friday December 14 when the one millionth case of product in a single year rolled off a conveyor line at Carib Breweries (St. Kitts Breweries) Limited.

The Carib Breweries (St. Kitts and Nevis) Ltd, which started operations in 1960 with just one product and now boasts a total eighteen products, crossed an important threshold with the production for the very first time in its history of one million cases of product in a single year. To witness the historic moment were, among others Prime Minister Harris, Minister Grant, and Governor’s Deputy Mr Michael Morton.

“I want to say special thanks for the invitation, but most importantly to give back a million thanks and more to the Breweries for the contribution that it has made over several generations in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Harris.

It was a special year, the Honourable Prime Minister observed, as in August the country received the millionth cruise visitor in a single cruise season for the first time. The week he added, was equally significant as the country had on Tuesday December 11 received the world’s largest cruise vessel in MS Harmony of the Seas, alongside Norwegian Jade that was also making an inaugural call. Friday December 14 when the one millionth case was produced was the day civil servants received a double salary, three years in a row.

“Heartiest congratulations, because manufacturing is critically important and over time we had seen a growth in terms of the electronic manufacturing,” observed Dr Harris. “We are now happy to see a resuscitation of the other aspects of the manufacturing sector, the Brewery and the beverages sector.”

The Minister of Finance said the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), in a report, had documented that the Brewery had done very well and that the sale of alcoholic beverages had gone up perhaps by 30-plus per cent. With the production of the millionth case in a single year on Friday, Dr Harris added, 2018 could be an outstanding year for Carib Breweries (St. Kitts and Nevis) Ltd.

“Congratulations to all of you for the hard work that led to this milestone and we hope that the Brewery will continue to grow from success to success - from strength to strength,” said Prime Minister Harris. “We pledge, as a government, to do all we can within the ambit of reasonableness to assist you in your forward thrust.”

The visiting party was taken on a brief tour of the plant by CEO Mr Mark Wilkin. It also included Deputy Speaker Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett, Local Area Parliamentary Representative the Hon Konris Maynard, Ambassador His Excellency Jonel Powell, and officials of the St. Kitts and Nevis Trades and Labour Union: President Mr Joseph O’Flaherty, First Vice President Mr Sydney Bridgewater, and Secretary General Mr Batuba Tak.
