Bridgetown, Barbados, 17 December 2018 - The Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF), a non-profit organization promoting science and technology in the Caribbean, today announced the graduation of an additional 18 students from its Fall 2018 Computer Coding Workshop, held on the campus of the University of the West Indies, Barbados.

The CSF Computer Coding Workshops were designed with the training/retraining of the Caribbean workforce of the future in mind, and were funded via partnership with Scotiabank, and the U.S. Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS. The broader goals of the Workshops are to stimulate more interest in science and engineering careers (especially in computer science) and additionally to help prepare students for university study in the STEM disciplines.  Further, the Workshops are intended to help increase the low numbers of skilled ICT workers in the Region and to encourage the formation of more globally competitive ICT companies. These goals are consistent with the mission of the CSF which is to assist with the diversification of the economies of the Caribbean Region by harnessing science and engineering for economic development, thereby helping to raise the standard of living.

The first of these 12-week Computer Coding Workshops was offered as a pilot from January to March 2018 in Barbados on Saturday mornings, and was successful in training an initial 12 students on website development and mobile Apps. Part (a) of the Level I syllabus focused on Website development using tools such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc, while Part (b) focused on mobile Apps using Ionic Creator, Angular JS, etc. The CSF was quick to point out that unlike short two or three-day exercises which others offer, these CSF Workshops are rigorous, in-depth, and thorough, and are intended for persons who are serious about gaining mastery of computer programming to build up their skills in preparation for university study, or to find or create employment opportunities. Thus, in addition to the Saturday morning classroom work, 3-4 hours of homework was assigned each week over the 12 weeks.

The Workshop that just concluded began on 29 September and culminated on 15 December 2018 with a Final Projects Showcase at which the participants demonstrated the various websites and mobile apps they created, to an enthusiastic audience of sponsors, colleagues, friends and family.  The Workshop Instructors (Leo-Neil Perry and Sanjay Mahabir) praised all the students for their hard work and enthusiasm, and noted that none of the students dropped out of the Workshop even when to going got tough.  The all-girls team, named Sistech, consisting of Xaria Prempeh, Richellia Stuart and Sharelle Jones, with their “School Organizer App for Students”, outperformed all the boys on both the technical work and the oral presentation.  In his closing remarks, Professor Cardinal Warde, the Interim Executive Director of the Caribbean Science Foundation, saluted the girls.  He said “the Sistech girls were model Coding Workshop students, and they have significantly raised the performance bar for future students.” He asked the girls to go out and act as role models and ambassadors for the Computer Coding Workshops, and to encourage more girls like them to apply to the upcoming Workshops.

The next Level I Barbados Computer Coding Workshop will be held on Saturday mornings beginning on 5 January 2019, again on the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, and will culminate with another public showcase by the participants on 23 March 2019.  In parallel, the Level I Coding Workshop will be replicated in St. Lucia at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School on Saturday mornings from 12 January to 30 March 2019.  For more information about these upcoming  Computer Coding Workshops, please visit http://caribbeanscience.org/coding-workshop/barbados/ and/or http://caribbeanscience.org/coding-workshop/st-lucia/.  Key important partners for the Workshops are the UWI - Cave Hill Campus, and the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).
